Notes to Readers at Mass..
St Marys, Brewood – Guidance Notes for Readers
1. Approaching and Leaving the Pulpit
• When approaching and leaving the pulpit, please bow to the altar
2. Gospel Acclamation
• On Sundays and solemn feasts, the first and last lines of the Gospel Acclamation are normally sung; led by the organist or priest. Readers lead the congregation in saying the middle two lines only (for example without saying “alleluia” at the beginning and end which will have been sung)
• Please note that during Lent the first and last lines are replaced with “Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Eternal glory.“ These will be sung; the organist or priest will lead the singing. Readers lead the congregation in saying the middle two lines only
• Once the spoken part of the acclamation is completed readers should make their way back to their seat in order to let the Gospel reader get into the pulpit. Please remember to bow to the altar.
3. Bidding Prayers
• Readers will lead the Bidding Prayers unless there is a Deacon attending Mass in which case he will lead the readings.
Otherwise:-
• A copy of the Bidding Prayers will be under the lectionary for readers to collect before mass so that they can prepare to read them.
• Please return to the pulpit during the last few lines of the Creed so that the priest can start the first line of the Bidding Prayers as soon as the Creed finishes.
• Please remain in the pulpit until the priest has finished the final prayer after the “Hail Mary” (after which the offertory of the gifts takes place).
Many thanks for offering to read at Mass and May God bless you in your ministry of His Word
